71:1

ا-ن-ن

إِنَّآ اِنَّاۤ innā Indeed, We

ر-س-ل

أَرۡسَلۡنَا اَرْسَلْنَا arsalnā [We] sent

ن-و-ح

نُوحًا نُوْحًا nūḥan Nuh

ا-ل-ي

إِلَىٰ اِلٰی ilā to

ق-و-م

قَوۡمِهِۦٓ قَوْمِهٖۤ qawmihi his people,

ا-ن

أَنۡ اَنْ an that

ن-ذ-ر

أَنذِرۡ اَنْذِرْ andhir "Warn

ق-و-م

قَوۡمَكَ قَوْمَكَ qawmaka your people

م-ن

مِن مِنْ min from

ق-ب-ل

قَبۡلِ قَبْلِ qabli before

ا-ن

أَن اَنْ an [that]

ا-ت-ي

يَأۡتِيَهُمۡ یَّاْتِیَهُمْ yatiyahum comes to them

ع-ذ-ب

عَذَابٌ عَذَابٌ ʿadhābun a punishment

ا-ل-م

أَلِيمٞ اَلِیْمٌ alīmun painful."

١ ١ (1)

We sent Noah to his people: “Warn your people before a painful punishment comes upon them.”

ق-و-ل

قَالَ قَالَ qāla He said,

ق-و-م

يَٰقَوۡمِ یٰقَوْمِ yāqawmi "O my people!

ا-ن-ن

إِنِّي اِنِّیْ innī Indeed, I am

لَكُمۡ لَكُمْ lakum to you

ن-ذ-ر

نَذِيرٞ نَذِیْرٌ nadhīrun a warner

ب-ي-ن

مُّبِينٌ مُّبِیْنٌ mubīnun clear.

٢ ٢ (2)

He said, “My people, I am an open warner to you,

ا-ن

أَنِ اَنِ ani That

ع-ب-د

ٱعۡبُدُواْ اعْبُدُوا uʿ'budū Worship

ا-ل-ه

ٱللَّهَ اللّٰهَ l-laha Allah,

و-ق-ي

وَٱتَّقُوهُ وَاتَّقُوْهُ wa-ittaqūhu and fear Him

ط-و-ع

وَأَطِيعُونِ وَاَطِیْعُوْنِ wa-aṭīʿūni and obey me.

٣ ٣ (3)

“that you should serve God conscientiously, and obey me,

71:4

غ-ف-ر

يَغۡفِرۡ یَغْفِرْ yaghfir He will forgive

لَكُم لَكُمْ lakum for you

م-ن

مِّن مِّنْ min [of]

ذ-ن-ب

ذُنُوبِكُمۡ ذُنُوْبِكُمْ dhunūbikum your sins

ا-خ-ر

وَيُؤَخِّرۡكُمۡ وَیُؤَخِّرْكُمْ wayu-akhir'kum and give you

ا-ل-ي

إِلَىٰٓ اِلٰۤی ilā for

ا-ج-ل

أَجَلٖ اَجَلٍ ajalin a term

س-م-و

مُّسَمًّىۚ مُّسَمًّی ؕ— musamman specified.

ا-ن-ن

إِنَّ اِنَّ inna Indeed,

ا-ج-ل

أَجَلَ اَجَلَ ajala (the) term,

ا-ل-ه

ٱللَّهِ اللّٰهِ l-lahi (of) Allah,

ا-ذ-ا

إِذَا اِذَا idhā when

ج-ي-ا

جَآءَ جَآءَ jāa it comes

ل-ا

لَا لَا lā not

ا-خ-ر

يُؤَخَّرُۚ یُؤَخَّرُ ۘ— yu-akharu is delayed,

ل-و

لَوۡ لَوْ law if

ك-و-ن

كُنتُمۡ كُنْتُمْ kuntum you

ع-ل-م

تَعۡلَمُونَ تَعْلَمُوْنَ taʿlamūna know."

٤ ٤ (4)

“so God may forgive you your sins and let you live on till a definite term; for the term of God cannot be put off when it has come, if only you knew.”0

71:5

ق-و-ل

قَالَ قَالَ qāla He said,

ر-ب-ب

رَبِّ رَبِّ rabbi "My Lord!

ا-ن-ن

إِنِّي اِنِّیْ innī Indeed, I

د-ع-و

دَعَوۡتُ دَعَوْتُ daʿawtu invited

ق-و-م

قَوۡمِي قَوْمِیْ qawmī my people

ل-ي-ل

لَيۡلٗا لَیْلًا laylan night

ن-ه-ر

وَنَهَارٗا وَّنَهَارًا wanahāran and day.

٥ ٥ (5)

He said, “My Lord, I have called to my people night and day,

ل-م

فَلَمۡ فَلَمْ falam But not

ز-ي-د

يَزِدۡهُمۡ یَزِدْهُمْ yazid'hum increased them

د-ع-و

دُعَآءِيٓ دُعَآءِیْۤ duʿāī my invitation

ا-ل-ل-ا

إِلَّا اِلَّا illā except

ف-ر-ر

فِرَارٗا فِرَارًا firāran (in) flight.

٦ ٦ (6)

“but my call only increases their escapism.

71:7

ا-ن-ن

وَإِنِّي وَاِنِّیْ wa-innī And indeed, I

ك-ل-ل

كُلَّمَا كُلَّمَا kullamā every time,

د-ع-و

دَعَوۡتُهُمۡ دَعَوْتُهُمْ daʿawtuhum I invited them

غ-ف-ر

لِتَغۡفِرَ لِتَغْفِرَ litaghfira that You may forgive

لَهُمۡ لَهُمْ lahum them,

ج-ع-ل

جَعَلُوٓاْ جَعَلُوْۤا jaʿalū they put

ص-ب-ع

أَصَٰبِعَهُمۡ اَصَابِعَهُمْ aṣābiʿahum their fingers

ف-ي

فِيٓ فِیْۤ fī in

ا-ذ-ن

ءَاذَانِهِمۡ اٰذَانِهِمْ ādhānihim their ears

غ-ش-ي

وَٱسۡتَغۡشَوۡاْ وَاسْتَغْشَوْا wa-is'taghshaw and covered themselves

ث-و-ب

ثِيَابَهُمۡ ثِیَابَهُمْ thiyābahum (with) their garments

ص-ر-ر

وَأَصَرُّواْ وَاَصَرُّوْا wa-aṣarrū and persisted

ك-ب-ر

وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُواْ وَاسْتَكْبَرُوا wa-is'takbarū and were arrogant

ك-ب-ر

ٱسۡتِكۡبَارٗا اسْتِكْبَارًا is'tik'bāran (with) pride.

٧ ٧ (7)

“And every time I called to them that You might forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears and covered themselves with their cloaks, being obstinate and puffed up with pride.

ث-م-م

ثُمَّ ثُمَّ thumma Then

ا-ن-ن

إِنِّي اِنِّیْ innī indeed, I

د-ع-و

دَعَوۡتُهُمۡ دَعَوْتُهُمْ daʿawtuhum invited them

ج-ه-ر

جِهَارٗا جِهَارًا jihāran publicly.

٨ ٨ (8)

“Then I have called them publicly,

ث-م-م

ثُمَّ ثُمَّ thumma Then

ا-ن-ن

إِنِّيٓ اِنِّیْۤ innī indeed, I

ع-ل-ن

أَعۡلَنتُ اَعْلَنْتُ aʿlantu announced

لَهُمۡ لَهُمْ lahum to them

س-ر-ر

وَأَسۡرَرۡتُ وَاَسْرَرْتُ wa-asrartu and I confided

لَهُمۡ لَهُمْ lahum to them

س-ر-ر

إِسۡرَارٗا اِسْرَارًا is'rāran secretly,

٩ ٩ (9)

“and I have addressed them openly and confided in them privately,

71:10

ق-و-ل

فَقُلۡتُ فَقُلْتُ faqul'tu Then I said,

غ-ف-ر

ٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ اسْتَغْفِرُوْا is'taghfirū "Ask forgiveness

ر-ب-ب

رَبَّكُمۡ رَبَّكُمْ ؕ— rabbakum (from) your Lord.

ا-ن-ن

إِنَّهُۥ اِنَّهٗ innahu Indeed, He

ك-و-ن

كَانَ كَانَ kāna is

غ-ف-ر

غَفَّارٗا غَفَّارًا ghaffāran Oft-Forgiving.

١٠ ١٠ (10)

“saying, ‘Seek forgiveness of your Lord, for God is most forgiving,
