(of) your Lord

ʿabdahu
(to) His servant
ز-ك-ر

زَكَرِيَّآ
زَكَرِیَّا
zakariyyā
Zakariya
A recitation of the mercy of your Lord on the devotee Zacharias.

he called

رَبَّهُۥ

(to) his Lord
ن-د-ي

نِدَآءً
نِدَآءً
nidāan
a call -
خ-ف-ي
![]()
خَفِيّٗا
خَفِیًّا
khafiyyan
secret.
He called on his Lord with a secret cry,

He said,
ر-ب-ب

رَبِّ
رَبِّ
rabbi
"My Lord!
ا-ن-ن

إِنِّي
اِنِّیْ
innī
Indeed, [I]
و-ه-ن

وَهَنَ
وَهَنَ
wahana
(have) weakened
ع-ظ-م
![]()
ٱلۡعَظۡمُ
الْعَظْمُ
l-ʿaẓmu
my bones,
م-ن
![]()
مِنِّي
مِنِّیْ
minnī
my bones,
ش-ع-ل
![]()
وَٱشۡتَعَلَ
وَاشْتَعَلَ
wa-ish'taʿala
and flared
ر-ا-س
![]()
ٱلرَّأۡسُ
الرَّاْسُ
r-rasu
(my) head
ش-ي-ب
![]()
شَيۡبٗا
شَیْبًا
shayban
(with) white,
ل-م
![]()
وَلَمۡ
وَّلَمْ
walam
and not
ك-و-ن
![]()
أَكُنۢ
اَكُنْ
akun
I have been
د-ع-و
![]()
بِدُعَآئِكَ
بِدُعَآىِٕكَ
biduʿāika
in (my) supplication (to) You
ر-ب-ب
![]()
رَبِّ
رَبِّ
rabbi
my Lord
ش-ق-ي
![]()
شَقِيّٗا
شَقِیًّا
shaqiyyan
unblessed.
saying, “My Lord, my bones have become feeble, and my hair has turned white, but I have never been disappointed in praying to You.

And indeed, I

خِفۡتُ

[I] fear
و-ل-ي

ٱلۡمَوَٰلِيَ
الْمَوَالِیَ
l-mawāliya
the successors
م-ن

مِن
مِنْ
min
after me,
و-ر-ي
![]()
وَرَآءِي
وَّرَآءِیْ
warāī
after me,
ك-و-ن
![]()
وَكَانَتِ
وَكَانَتِ
wakānati
and is
م-ر-ا
![]()
ٱمۡرَأَتِي
امْرَاَتِیْ
im'ra-atī
my wife
ع-ق-ر
![]()
عَاقِرٗا
عَاقِرًا
ʿāqiran
barren.
و-ه-ب
![]()
فَهَبۡ
فَهَبْ
fahab
So give
ل
![]()
لِي
لِیْ
lī
[to] me
م-ن
![]()
مِن
مِنْ
min
from
ل-د-ن
![]()
لَّدُنكَ
لَّدُنْكَ
ladunka
Yourself
و-ل-ي
![]()
وَلِيّٗا
وَلِیًّا
waliyyan
an heir
“Now I fear my relatives after me, as my wife is barren. So give me a son from You,

يَرِثُنِي
یَّرِثُنِیْ
yarithunī
Who will inherit me
و-ر-ث

وَيَرِثُ
وَیَرِثُ
wayarithu
and inherit
م-ن
![]()
مِنۡ
مِنْ
min
from
ا-و-ل
![]()
ءَالِ
اٰلِ
āli
(the) family
ي-ع-ق
![]()
يَعۡقُوبَۖ
یَعْقُوْبَ ۖۗ—
yaʿqūba
(of) Yaqub.
ج-ع-ل
![]()
وَٱجۡعَلۡهُ
وَاجْعَلْهُ
wa-ij'ʿalhu
And make him
ر-ب-ب
![]()
رَبِّ
رَبِّ
rabbi
my Lord,
ر-ض-و
![]()
رَضِيّٗا
رَضِیًّا
raḍiyyan
pleasing."
“who will be my heir, and succeed to the lineage of Jacob. And, my Lord, make him acceptable.

ز-ك-ر

يَٰزَكَرِيَّآ
یٰزَكَرِیَّاۤ
yāzakariyyā
"O Zakariya!
ا-ن-ن

إِنَّا
اِنَّا
innā
Indeed, We
ب-ش-ر
![]()
نُبَشِّرُكَ
نُبَشِّرُكَ
nubashiruka
[We] give you glad tidings
غ-ل-م
![]()
بِغُلَٰمٍ
بِغُلٰمِ
bighulāmin
of a boy
س-م-و
![]()
ٱسۡمُهُۥ
١سْمُهٗ
us'muhu
his name
ح-ي-ي
![]()
يَحۡيَىٰ
یَحْیٰی ۙ—
yaḥyā
(will be) Yahya,
ل-م
![]()
لَمۡ
لَمْ
lam
not
ج-ع-ل
![]()
نَجۡعَل
نَجْعَلْ
najʿal
We (have) assigned
ل
![]()
لَّهُۥ
لَّهٗ
lahu
[for] it
م-ن
![]()
مِن
مِنْ
min
before
ق-ب-ل
![]()
قَبۡلُ
قَبْلُ
qablu
before
س-م-و
![]()
سَمِيّٗا
سَمِیًّا
samiyyan
(this) name."
“O Zacharias: We bring you good news of a son, whose name will be John — Yahya, ‘He Lines’— We have not attributed it as a namesake before.”

لِیْ
lī
I have
غ-ل-م

غُلَٰمٞ
غُلٰمٌ
ghulāmun
a boy,
ك-و-ن
![]()
وَكَانَتِ
وَّكَانَتِ
wakānati
while is
م-ر-ا
![]()
ٱمۡرَأَتِي
امْرَاَتِیْ
im'ra-atī
my wife
ع-ق-ر
![]()
عَاقِرٗا
عَاقِرًا
ʿāqiran
barren,
ق-د
![]()
وَقَدۡ
وَّقَدْ
waqad
and indeed,
ب-ل-غ
![]()
بَلَغۡتُ
بَلَغْتُ
balaghtu
I have reached
م-ن
![]()
مِنَ
مِنَ
mina
of
ك-ب-ر
![]()
ٱلۡكِبَرِ
الْكِبَرِ
l-kibari
the old age
ع-ت-و
![]()
عِتِيّٗا
عِتِیًّا
ʿitiyyan
extreme?"
He said, “My Lord, how will I have a son when my wife is barren and I have become decrepit with age?”

كَذٰلِكَ ۚ—

"Thus,

رَبُّكَ

your Lord,
ه-و

هُوَ
هُوَ
huwa
'It
ع-ل-ي

عَلَيَّ
عَلَیَّ
ʿalayya
(is) easy for Me
ه-و-ن
![]()
هَيِّنٞ
هَیِّنٌ
hayyinun
(is) easy for Me
ق-د
![]()
وَقَدۡ
وَّقَدْ
waqad
and certainly
خ-ل-ق
![]()
خَلَقۡتُكَ
خَلَقْتُكَ
khalaqtuka
I (have) created you
م-ن
![]()
مِن
مِنْ
min
before,
ق-ب-ل
![]()
قَبۡلُ
قَبْلُ
qablu
before,
ل-م
![]()
وَلَمۡ
وَلَمْ
walam
while not
ك-و-ن
![]()
تَكُ
تَكُ
taku
you were
ش-ي-ا
![]()
شَيۡـٔٗا
شَیْـًٔا
shayan
anything.'"
“It will be so: your Lord says that is easy for Me, since I created you before, when you had been nothing.”

"My Lord!

Make
ل

لِّيٓ
لِّیْۤ

for me
ا-ي-ا

ءَايَةٗۖ
اٰیَةً ؕ—
āyatan
a sign."
ق-و-ل
![]()
قَالَ
قَالَ
qāla
He said,
ا-ي-ا
![]()
ءَايَتُكَ
اٰیَتُكَ
āyatuka
"Your sign
ا-ل-ل-ا
![]()
أَلَّا
اَلَّا
allā
(is) that not
ك-ل-م
![]()
تُكَلِّمَ
تُكَلِّمَ
tukallima
you will speak
ن-و-س
![]()
ٱلنَّاسَ
النَّاسَ
n-nāsa
(to) the people,
ث-ل-ث
![]()
ثَلَٰثَ
ثَلٰثَ
thalātha
(for) three
ل-ي-ل
![]()
لَيَالٖ
لَیَالٍ
layālin
nights
س-و-ي
![]()
سَوِيّٗا
سَوِیًّا
sawiyyan
sound."
“My Lord, give me a sign.” “Your sign shall be that you not speak to people for three nights in a row.”
