Surah Mumtahanah

Believers, don’t take My enemies and your enemies for friends, offering them affection when they have already repudiated the truth that has come to you; they banish the messenger and you because you believe in God, your Lord. If you have come out to strive for My cause, seeking My pleasure, don’t have secret converse with them in friendship, for I know what you conceal and what you reveal; and whoever among you does that has strayed from the right way.
- Thomas Cleary
If they dominated you they would be hostile to you, acting and speaking maliciously toward you, wishing you to repudiate faith.
- Thomas Cleary
Neither your relatives nor your children will be of any avail to you on the day of resurrection. God will judge between you, seeing whatever you do.
- Thomas Cleary
There is a good example for you in Abraham and those with him when they said to their people, “We have nothing to do with you and what you worship instead of God. We repudiate you; enmity between us has begun, and hatred that will last until you believe in God alone”— the exception being Abraham’s saying to his father, “I will ask forgiveness for you, though I have no power from God to do anything for you”— “Our Lord, we put our trust in You: we turn repentant to You, for destiny leads to You.
- Thomas Cleary
“Our Lord, don’t make us a test for those who scoff; and forgive us, our Lord, for You are the epitome of power and wisdom.”
- Thomas Cleary
There is a good example in them already there for those who hope for God and the final day; but if any turn away, even so God is uniquely independent, worthy of all praise.
- Thomas Cleary
Perhaps God may establish friendship between you and those of them you regard as enemies: and God is able; and God is most forgiving, most merciful.
- Thomas Cleary
God has not forbidden you to be charitable and just to those who have not fought you over religion or driven you from your homes, for God loves the just.
- Thomas Cleary
God only forbids you to befriend those who fight you over religion and drive you from your homes, and back your expulsion; and any who befriend them are themselves wrongdoers.
- Thomas Cleary
Believers, when refugee women believers come to you, examine them —God knows their faith best— and if you recognize them as believers, then don’t return them to the atheists: these women are not lawful wives for them, and they are not lawful husbands for these women. But give them what they have spent. And there is no blame on you if you marry them, provided you give them their dowries. But don’t maintain guardianship over atheists— ask for what you have spent, and let them ask for that they have spent. That is the judgment of God, judging between you. And God is most knowing, most wise.
