Alif Lam Ra.
ك-ت-ب

kitābun
(This is) a Book
ح-ك-م
![]()
أُحۡكِمَتۡ
اُحْكِمَتْ
uḥ'kimat
are perfected
ا-ي-ا
![]()
ءَايَٰتُهُۥ
اٰیٰتُهٗ
āyātuhu
its Verses
ث-م-م
![]()
ثُمَّ
ثُمَّ
thumma
moreover,
ف-ص-ل
![]()
فُصِّلَتۡ
فُصِّلَتْ
fuṣṣilat
explained in detail
م-ن
![]()
مِن
مِنْ
min
from (he One Who)
ل-د-ن
![]()
لَّدُنۡ
لَّدُنْ
ladun
from (he One Who)
ح-ك-م
![]()
حَكِيمٍ
حَكِیْمٍ
ḥakīmin
(is) All-Wise,
خ-ب-ر
![]()
خَبِيرٍ
خَبِیْرٍ
khabīrin
All-Aware.
A.L.R.: A Book, whose signs are confirmed, then explained, from One who is most wise and aware,

you worship
ا-ل-ل-ا

اِلَّا
illā
but
ا-ل-ه

ٱللَّهَۚ
اللّٰهَ ؕ—
l-laha
Allah.
ا-ن-ن
![]()
إِنَّنِي
اِنَّنِیْ
innanī
Indeed, I am
ل
![]()
لَكُم
لَكُمْ
lakum
to you
م-ن
![]()
مِّنۡهُ
مِّنْهُ
min'hu
from Him
ن-ذ-ر
![]()
نَذِيرٞ
نَذِیْرٌ
nadhīrun
a warner
ب-ش-ر
![]()
وَبَشِيرٞ
وَّبَشِیْرٌ
wabashīrun
and a bearer of glad tidings."
that you not worship aught but God, from whom I am a warner and a herald of good news.

And that
غ-ف-ر

ٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ
اسْتَغْفِرُوْا
is'taghfirū
"Seek forgiveness
ر-ب-ب

رَبَّكُمۡ
رَبَّكُمْ
rabbakum
(of) your Lord
ث-م-م

ثُمَّ
ثُمَّ
thumma
and
ت-و-ب
![]()
تُوبُوٓاْ
تُوْبُوْۤا
tūbū
turn in repentance
ا-ل-ي
![]()
إِلَيۡهِ
اِلَیْهِ
ilayhi
to Him,
م-ت-ع
![]()
يُمَتِّعۡكُم
یُمَتِّعْكُمْ
yumattiʿ'kum
He will let you
م-ت-ع
![]()
مَّتَٰعًا
مَّتَاعًا
matāʿan
enjoy
ح-س-ن
![]()
حَسَنًا
حَسَنًا
ḥasanan
a good
ا-ل-ي
![]()
إِلَىٰٓ
اِلٰۤی
ilā
for
ا-ج-ل
![]()
أَجَلٖ
اَجَلٍ
ajalin
a term
س-م-و
![]()
مُّسَمّٗى
مُّسَمًّی
musamman
appointed.
ا-ت-ي
![]()
وَيُؤۡتِ
وَّیُؤْتِ
wayu'ti
And give
ك-ل-ل
![]()
كُلَّ
كُلَّ
kulla
(to) every
ذ-و
![]()
ذِي
ذِیْ
dhī
owner
ف-ض-ل
![]()
فَضۡلٖ
فَضْلٍ
faḍlin
(of) grace
ف-ض-ل
![]()
فَضۡلَهُۥۖ
فَضْلَهٗ ؕ—
faḍlahu
His Grace.
ا-ن
![]()
وَإِن
وَاِنْ
wa-in
But if
و-ل-ي
![]()
تَوَلَّوۡاْ
تَوَلَّوْا
tawallaw
you turn away
ا-ن-ن
![]()
فَإِنِّيٓ
فَاِنِّیْۤ
fa-innī
then indeed, I
خ-و-ف
![]()
أَخَافُ
اَخَافُ
akhāfu
fear
ع-ل-ي
![]()
عَلَيۡكُمۡ
عَلَیْكُمْ
ʿalaykum
for you
ع-ذ-ب
![]()
عَذَابَ
عَذَابَ
ʿadhāba
(the) punishment
ي-و-م
![]()
يَوۡمٖ
یَوْمٍ
yawmin
(of) a Great Day.
ك-ب-ر
![]()
كَبِيرٍ
كَبِیْرٍ
kabīrin
(of) a Great Day.
And that you seek forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to God, that God may grant you a good provision for a determined period, and bestow divine grace on all the virtuous; but if you turn away, then I fear for you punishment on a grievous day.

(is) your return,

and He
ع-ل-ي

عَلَىٰ
عَلٰی
ʿalā
(is) on
ك-ل-ل
![]()
كُلِّ
كُلِّ
kulli
every
ش-ي-ا
![]()
شَيۡءٖ
شَیْءٍ
shayin
thing
ق-د-ر
![]()
قَدِيرٌ
قَدِیْرٌ
qadīrun
All-Powerful."
Your return is to God, Who has power over all things.

No doubt!

fold up
ص-د-ر

صُدُورَهُمۡ
صُدُوْرَهُمْ
ṣudūrahum
their breasts
خ-ف-ي

لِيَسۡتَخۡفُواْ
لِیَسْتَخْفُوْا
liyastakhfū
that they may hide
م-ن
![]()
مِنۡهُۚ
مِنْهُ ؕ—
min'hu
from Him.
ل-ا
![]()
أَلَا
اَلَا
alā
Surely,
ح-ي-ن
![]()
حِينَ
حِیْنَ
ḥīna
when
غ-ش-ي
![]()
يَسۡتَغۡشُونَ
یَسْتَغْشُوْنَ
yastaghshūna
they cover (themselves)
ث-و-ب
![]()
ثِيَابَهُمۡ
ثِیَابَهُمْ ۙ—
thiyābahum
(with) their garments,
ع-ل-م
![]()
يَعۡلَمُ
یَعْلَمُ
yaʿlamu
He knows
م-ا
![]()
مَا
مَا
mā
what
س-ر-ر
![]()
يُسِرُّونَ
یُسِرُّوْنَ
yusirrūna
they conceal
م-ا
![]()
وَمَا
وَمَا
wamā
and what
ع-ل-ن
![]()
يُعۡلِنُونَۚ
یُعْلِنُوْنَ ۚ—
yuʿ'linūna
they reveal.
ا-ن-ن
![]()
إِنَّهُۥ
اِنَّهٗ
innahu
Indeed, He
ع-ل-م
![]()
عَلِيمُۢ
عَلِیْمٌۢ
ʿalīmun
(is) All-Knower
ذ-و
![]()
بِذَاتِ
بِذَاتِ
bidhāti
of what
ص-د-ر
![]()
ٱلصُّدُورِ
الصُّدُوْرِ
ṣ-ṣudūri
(is in) the breasts.
See how they fold up their hearts, to lie hidden from God! Even when they cover themselves with their clothing, God knows what they conceal and what they reveal, for God knows what is in hearts.

ٱلۡأَرۡضِ

the earth
ا-ل-ل-ا

إِلَّا
اِلَّا
illā
but
ع-ل-ي

عَلَى
عَلَی
ʿalā
on
ا-ل-ه
![]()
ٱللَّهِ
اللّٰهِ
l-lahi
Allah
ر-ز-ق
![]()
رِزۡقُهَا
رِزْقُهَا
riz'quhā
(is) its provision.
ع-ل-م
![]()
وَيَعۡلَمُ
وَیَعْلَمُ
wayaʿlamu
And He knows
ق-ر-ر
![]()
مُسۡتَقَرَّهَا
مُسْتَقَرَّهَا
mus'taqarrahā
its dwelling place
و-د-ع
![]()
وَمُسۡتَوۡدَعَهَاۚ
وَمُسْتَوْدَعَهَا ؕ—
wamus'tawdaʿahā
and its place of storage.
ك-ل-ل
![]()
كُلّٞ
كُلٌّ
kullun
All
ف-ي
![]()
فِي
فِیْ
fī
(is) in
ك-ت-ب
![]()
كِتَٰبٖ
كِتٰبٍ
kitābin
a Record
ب-ي-ن
![]()
مُّبِينٖ
مُّبِیْنٍ
mubīnin
clear.
And there is no moving creature upon the earth but whose sustenance is up to God; and God knows its time and place, and its grave. All is in a clear writ.

And He
ا-ل-ل-ذ

ٱلَّذِي

(is) the One Who

khalaqa
created
س-م-و

ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
السَّمٰوٰتِ
s-samāwāti
the heavens
ا-ر-ض
![]()
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ
وَالْاَرْضَ
wal-arḍa
and the earth
ف-ي
![]()
فِي
فِیْ
fī
in
س-ت-ت
![]()
سِتَّةِ
سِتَّةِ
sittati
six
ي-و-م
![]()
أَيَّامٖ
اَیَّامٍ
ayyāmin
epochs,
ك-و-ن
![]()
وَكَانَ
وَّكَانَ
wakāna
and His throne was
ع-ر-ش
![]()
عَرۡشُهُۥ
عَرْشُهٗ
ʿarshuhu
and His throne was
ع-ل-ي
![]()
عَلَى
عَلَی
ʿalā
on
م-و-ه
![]()
ٱلۡمَآءِ
الْمَآءِ
l-māi
the water
ب-ل-و
![]()
لِيَبۡلُوَكُمۡ
لِیَبْلُوَكُمْ
liyabluwakum
that He might test [you]
ا-ي-ي
![]()
أَيُّكُمۡ
اَیُّكُمْ
ayyukum
which of you
ح-س-ن
![]()
أَحۡسَنُ
اَحْسَنُ
aḥsanu
(is) best
ع-م-ل
![]()
عَمَلٗاۗ
عَمَلًا ؕ—
ʿamalan
(in) deed.
ل-ا-ن
![]()
وَلَئِن
وَلَىِٕنْ
wala-in
But if
ق-و-ل
![]()
قُلۡتَ
قُلْتَ
qul'ta
you say,
ا-ن-ن
![]()
إِنَّكُم
اِنَّكُمْ
innakum
"Indeed, you
ب-ع-ث
![]()
مَّبۡعُوثُونَ
مَّبْعُوْثُوْنَ
mabʿūthūna
(will be) resurrected
م-ن
![]()
مِنۢ
مِنْ
min
after
ب-ع-د
![]()
بَعۡدِ
بَعْدِ
baʿdi
after
م-و-ت
![]()
ٱلۡمَوۡتِ
الْمَوْتِ
l-mawti
[the] death,"
ق-و-ل
![]()
لَيَقُولَنَّ
لَیَقُوْلَنَّ
layaqūlanna
surely would say
ا-ل-ل-ذ
![]()
ٱلَّذِينَ
الَّذِیْنَ
alladhīna
those who
ك-ف-ر
![]()
كَفَرُوٓاْ
كَفَرُوْۤا
kafarū
disbelieved,
ا-ن
![]()
إِنۡ
اِنْ
in
"This is not
ه-ا-ذ
![]()
هَٰذَآ
هٰذَاۤ
hādhā
"This is not
ا-ل-ل-ا
![]()
إِلَّا
اِلَّا
illā
but
س-ح-ر
![]()
سِحۡرٞ
سِحْرٌ
siḥ'run
a magic
ب-ي-ن
![]()
مُّبِينٞ
مُّبِیْنٌ
mubīnun
clear."
And it is God who created the heavens and the earth in six days while God’s throne was upon the water, to test which of you is best in conduct. But if you were to say, “You will be resurrected after death,” those who scoffed would say, “This is but obvious witchcraft.”

We delay

from them
ع-ذ-ب

ٱلۡعَذَابَ
الْعَذَابَ
l-ʿadhāba
the punishment
ا-ل-ي
![]()
إِلَىٰٓ
اِلٰۤی
ilā
for
ا-م-م
![]()
أُمَّةٖ
اُمَّةٍ
ummatin
a time
ع-د-د
![]()
مَّعۡدُودَةٖ
مَّعْدُوْدَةٍ
maʿdūdatin
determined,
ق-و-ل
![]()
لَّيَقُولُنَّ
لَّیَقُوْلُنَّ
layaqūlunna
they will surely say,
م-ا
![]()
مَا
مَا
mā
"What
ح-ب-س
![]()
يَحۡبِسُهُۥٓۗ
یَحْبِسُهٗ ؕ—
yaḥbisuhu
detains it?"
ل-ا
![]()
أَلَا
اَلَا
alā
No doubt!
ي-و-م
![]()
يَوۡمَ
یَوْمَ
yawma
(On) the Day
ا-ت-ي
![]()
يَأۡتِيهِمۡ
یَاْتِیْهِمْ
yatīhim
it comes to them
ل-ي-س
![]()
لَيۡسَ
لَیْسَ
laysa
not
ص-ر-ف
![]()
مَصۡرُوفًا
مَصْرُوْفًا
maṣrūfan
(will be) averted
ع-ن
![]()
عَنۡهُمۡ
عَنْهُمْ
ʿanhum
from them
ح-ي-ق
![]()
وَحَاقَ
وَحَاقَ
waḥāqa
and will surround
ب
![]()
بِهِم
بِهِمْ
bihim
them
م-ا
![]()
مَّا
مَّا
mā
what
ك-و-ن
![]()
كَانُواْ
كَانُوْا
kānū
they used (to)
ب
![]()
بِهِۦ
بِهٖ
bihi
mock at [it].
ه-ز-ا
![]()
يَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ
یَسْتَهْزِءُوْنَ
yastahziūna
mock at [it].
And if We deferred the punishment for them for a determined time, they would surely say, “What holds it back?” Ah, the day it comes to them, it will not be diverted from them; and what they used to ridicule will surround them.

We give man a taste
ا-ن-س

ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ
الْاِنْسَانَ
l-insāna
We give man a taste
م-ن

مِنَّا
مِنَّا
minnā
(of) Mercy from Us,
ر-ح-م
![]()
رَحۡمَةٗ
رَحْمَةً
raḥmatan
(of) Mercy from Us,
ث-م-م
![]()
ثُمَّ
ثُمَّ
thumma
then
ن-ز-ع
![]()
نَزَعۡنَٰهَا
نَزَعْنٰهَا
nazaʿnāhā
We withdraw it
م-ن
![]()
مِنۡهُ
مِنْهُ ۚ—
min'hu
from
ا-ن-ن
![]()
إِنَّهُۥ
اِنَّهٗ
innahu
indeed, he
ي-ا-س
![]()
لَيَـُٔوسٞ
لَیَـُٔوْسٌ
layaūsun
(is) despairing
ك-ف-ر
![]()
كَفُورٞ
كَفُوْرٌ
kafūrun
(and) ungrateful.
If We let man taste of mercy from Us, and then withdraw it from him, he despairs and is ungrateful.

But if

أَذَقۡنَٰهُ
اَذَقْنٰهُ
adhaqnāhu
We give him a taste
ن-ع-م

نَعۡمَآءَ
نَعْمَآءَ
naʿmāa
(of) favor
ب-ع-د
![]()
بَعۡدَ
بَعْدَ
baʿda
after
ض-ر-ر
![]()
ضَرَّآءَ
ضَرَّآءَ
ḍarrāa
hardship
م-س-س
![]()
مَسَّتۡهُ
مَسَّتْهُ
massathu
(has) touched him,
ق-و-ل
![]()
لَيَقُولَنَّ
لَیَقُوْلَنَّ
layaqūlanna
surely, he will say,
ذ-ه-ب
![]()
ذَهَبَ
ذَهَبَ
dhahaba
"Have gone
س-و-ا
![]()
ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتُ
السَّیِّاٰتُ
s-sayiātu
the evils
ع-ن
![]()
عَنِّيٓۚ
عَنِّیْ ؕ—
ʿannī
from
ا-ن-ن
![]()
إِنَّهُۥ
اِنَّهٗ
innahu
Indeed, he
ف-ر-ح
![]()
لَفَرِحٞ
لَفَرِحٌ
lafariḥun
(is) exultant
ف-خ-ر
![]()
فَخُورٌ
فَخُوْرٌ
fakhūrun
(and) boastful.
And if We let him taste favor after affliction has touched him, he will say, “The ills have gone from me!” Indeed, he exults and is boastful.
