      72:1
      ق-و-ل
      قُلۡ قُلْ qul Say,
      و-ح-ي
      أُوحِيَ اُوْحِیَ ūḥiya "It has been
      ا-ل-ي
      إِلَيَّ اِلَیَّ ilayya to me
      ا-ن-ن
      أَنَّهُ اَنَّهُ annahu that
      س-م-ع
      ٱسۡتَمَعَ اسْتَمَعَ is'tamaʿa listened
      ن-ف-ر
      نَفَرٞ نَفَرٌ nafarun a group
      م-ن
      مِّنَ مِّنَ mina of
      ج-ن-ن
      ٱلۡجِنِّ الْجِنِّ l-jini the jinn,
      ق-و-ل
      فَقَالُوٓاْ فَقَالُوْۤا faqālū and they said,
      ا-ن-ن
      إِنَّا اِنَّا innā "Indeed, we
      س-م-ع
      سَمِعۡنَا سَمِعْنَا samiʿ'nā heard
      ق-ر-ا
      قُرۡءَانًا قُرْاٰنًا qur'ānan a Quran
      ع-ج-ب
      عَجَبٗا عَجَبًا ʿajaban amazing,
      ١ ۟ۙ (1)

      ​Say, “It has been revealed to me that a band of sprites listened in, then said, ‘We have indeed heard a wondrous Recital!

      ه-د-ي
      يَهۡدِيٓ یَّهْدِیْۤ yahdī It guides
      ا-ل-ي
      إِلَى اِلَی ilā to
      ر-ش-د
      ٱلرُّشۡدِ الرُّشْدِ r-rush'di the right way,
      ا-م-ن
      فَـَٔامَنَّا فَاٰمَنَّا faāmannā so we believe
      ب
      بِهِۦۖ بِهٖ ؕ— bihi in it,
      ل-ن
      وَلَن وَلَنْ walan and never
      ش-ر-ك
      نُّشۡرِكَ نُّشْرِكَ nush'rika we will associate
      ر-ب-ب
      بِرَبِّنَآ بِرَبِّنَاۤ birabbinā with our Lord
      ا-ح-د
      أَحَدٗا اَحَدًا aḥadan anyone.
      ٢ ۟ۙ (2)

      ​“‘It guides to reason, and we believe in it. So we won’t associate anyone with our Lord.

      72:3
      ا-ن-ن
      وَأَنَّهُۥ وَّاَنَّهٗ wa-annahu And that He -
      ع-ل-و
      تَعَٰلَىٰ تَعٰلٰی taʿālā Exalted is
      ج-د-د
      جَدُّ جَدُّ jaddu (the) Majesty
      ر-ب-ب
      رَبِّنَا رَبِّنَا rabbinā (of) our Lord -
      م-ا
      مَا مَا not
      ا-خ-ذ
      ٱتَّخَذَ اتَّخَذَ ittakhadha He has taken
      ص-ح-ب
      صَٰحِبَةٗ صَاحِبَةً ṣāḥibatan a wife
      ل-ا
      وَلَا وَّلَا walā and not
      و-ل-د
      وَلَدٗا وَلَدًا waladan a son,
      ٣ ۟ۙ (3)

      ​“‘For the status of our Lord is transcendent, admitting of neither mate nor offspring.

      72:4
      ا-ن-ن
      وَأَنَّهُۥ وَّاَنَّهٗ wa-annahu And that he
      ك-و-ن
      كَانَ كَانَ kāna used to
      ق-و-ل
      يَقُولُ یَقُوْلُ yaqūlu speak -
      س-ف-ه
      سَفِيهُنَا سَفِیْهُنَا safīhunā the foolish among us
      ع-ل-ي
      عَلَى عَلَی ʿalā against
      ا-ل-ه
      ٱللَّهِ اللّٰهِ l-lahi Allah
      ش-ط-ط
      شَطَطٗا شَطَطًا shaṭaṭan an excessive transgression.
      ٤ ۟ۙ (4)

      ​“‘Though the fools among us used to speak in a manner infringing upon the dignity of God,

      ا-ن-ن
      وَأَنَّا وَّاَنَّا wa-annā And that we
      ظ-ن-ن
      ظَنَنَّآ ظَنَنَّاۤ ẓanannā thought
      ا-ن
      أَن اَنْ an that
      ل-ن
      لَّن لَّنْ lan never
      ق-و-ل
      تَقُولَ تَقُوْلَ taqūla will say
      ا-ن-س
      ٱلۡإِنسُ الْاِنْسُ l-insu the men
      ج-ن-ن
      وَٱلۡجِنُّ وَالْجِنُّ wal-jinu and the jinn,
      ع-ل-ي
      عَلَى عَلَی ʿalā against
      ا-ل-ه
      ٱللَّهِ اللّٰهِ l-lahi Allah
      ك-ذ-ب
      كَذِبٗا كَذِبًا kadhiban any lie.
      ٥ ۟ۙ (5)

      ​“‘we think no human or sprite should speak any falsehood of God.

      72:6
      ا-ن-ن
      وَأَنَّهُۥ وَّاَنَّهٗ wa-annahu And that
      ك-و-ن
      كَانَ كَانَ kāna (there) were
      ر-ج-ل
      رِجَالٞ رِجَالٌ rijālun men
      م-ن
      مِّنَ مِّنَ mina among
      ا-ن-س
      ٱلۡإِنسِ الْاِنْسِ l-insi mankind
      ع-و-ذ
      يَعُوذُونَ یَعُوْذُوْنَ yaʿūdhūna who sought refuge
      ر-ج-ل
      بِرِجَالٖ بِرِجَالٍ birijālin in (the) men
      م-ن
      مِّنَ مِّنَ mina from
      ج-ن-ن
      ٱلۡجِنِّ الْجِنِّ l-jini the jinn,
      ز-ي-د
      فَزَادُوهُمۡ فَزَادُوْهُمْ fazādūhum so they increased them
      ر-ه-ق
      رَهَقٗا رَهَقًا rahaqan (in) burden.
      ٦ ۟ۙ (6)

      ​“ ‘Yet there were in fact individual humans who resorted to particular sprites, but that increased the pressure on them;

      72:7
      ا-ن-ن
      وَأَنَّهُمۡ وَّاَنَّهُمْ wa-annahum And that they
      ظ-ن-ن
      ظَنُّواْ ظَنُّوْا ẓannū thought
      ك-م-ا
      كَمَا كَمَا kamā as
      ظ-ن-ن
      ظَنَنتُمۡ ظَنَنْتُمْ ẓanantum you thought
      ا-ن
      أَن اَنْ an that
      ل-ن
      لَّن لَّنْ lan never
      ب-ع-ث
      يَبۡعَثَ یَّبْعَثَ yabʿatha will raise
      ا-ل-ه
      ٱللَّهُ اللّٰهُ l-lahu Allah
      ا-ح-د
      أَحَدٗا اَحَدًا aḥadan anyone.
      ٧ ۟ۙ (7)

      “‘for they assumed, as you assume, that God won’t resurrect anyone.

      72:8
      ا-ن-ن
      وَأَنَّا وَّاَنَّا wa-annā And that we
      ل-م-س
      لَمَسۡنَا لَمَسْنَا lamasnā sought to touch
      س-م-و
      ٱلسَّمَآءَ السَّمَآءَ s-samāa the heaven
      و-ج-د
      فَوَجَدۡنَٰهَا فَوَجَدْنٰهَا fawajadnāhā but we found it
      م-ل-ا
      مُلِئَتۡ مُلِئَتْ muli-at filled (with)
      ح-ر-س
      حَرَسٗا حَرَسًا ḥarasan guards
      ش-د-د
      شَدِيدٗا شَدِیْدًا shadīdan severe,
      ش-ه-ب
      وَشُهُبٗا وَّشُهُبًا washuhuban and flaming fires.
      ٨ ۟ۙ (8)

      ​“‘But though we searched for heaven, we found it occupied by a fierce guard and filled with shooting stars.

      72:9
      ا-ن-ن
      وَأَنَّا وَّاَنَّا wa-annā And that we
      ك-و-ن
      كُنَّا كُنَّا kunnā used to
      ق-ع-د
      نَقۡعُدُ نَقْعُدُ naqʿudu sit
      م-ن
      مِنۡهَا مِنْهَا min'hā there in
      ق-ع-د
      مَقَٰعِدَ مَقَاعِدَ maqāʿida positions
      س-م-ع
      لِلسَّمۡعِۖ لِلسَّمْعِ ؕ— lilssamʿi for hearing,
      م-ن
      فَمَن فَمَنْ faman but (he) who
      س-م-ع
      يَسۡتَمِعِ یَّسْتَمِعِ yastamiʿi listens
      ا-ي-ن
      ٱلۡأٓنَ الْاٰنَ l-āna now
      و-ج-د
      يَجِدۡ یَجِدْ yajid will find
      ل
      لَهُۥ لَهٗ lahu for him
      ش-ه-ب
      شِهَابٗا شِهَابًا shihāban a flaming fire
      ر-ص-د
      رَّصَدٗا رَّصَدًا raṣadan waiting.
      ٩ ۟ۙ (9)

      ​“‘We used to sit in seats around there to listen, but whoever listens now will find a shooting star aimed at him.

      72:10
      ا-ن-ن
      وَأَنَّا وَّاَنَّا wa-annā And that we -
      ل-ا
      لَا لَا not
      د-ر-ي
      نَدۡرِيٓ نَدْرِیْۤ nadrī we know
      ش-ر-ر
      أَشَرٌّ اَشَرٌّ asharrun whether evil
      ر-و-د
      أُرِيدَ اُرِیْدَ urīda is intended
      م-ن
      بِمَن بِمَنْ biman for (those) who
      ف-ي
      فِي فِی (are) in
      ا-ر-ض
      ٱلۡأَرۡضِ الْاَرْضِ l-arḍi the earth
      ا-م
      أَمۡ اَمْ am or
      ر-و-د
      أَرَادَ اَرَادَ arāda intends
      ب
      بِهِمۡ بِهِمْ bihim for them
      ر-ب-ب
      رَبُّهُمۡ رَبُّهُمْ rabbuhum their Lord
      ر-ش-د
      رَشَدٗا رَشَدًا rashadan a right path.
      ١٠ ۟ۙ (10)

      “‘We ourselves don’t know whether ill is intended for those on earth, or if their Lord wants true direction for them:
